Nepal is a year-round trekking destination, but some seasons are definitely better than others. The best time to trek depends on your destination, your tolerance for crowds, and what kind of experience you’re seeking. Let’s break down each season.

Spring (March – May)

Pros:

  • Clear skies and excellent mountain visibility
  • Warm, comfortable temperatures during the day
  • Rhododendron forests in full bloom (absolutely stunning!)
  • Stable weather conditions
  • Longer daylight hours

Cons:

  • Peak season means crowded trails and teahouses
  • Higher prices for accommodation and flights
  • Afternoon clouds can obscure mountain views
  • Gets dusty at lower elevations

Best Treks:

Perfect for: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley, Gokyo Lakes, Upper Mustang

Autumn (September – November)

Pros:

  • The most popular trekking season for good reason
  • Crystal clear skies with stunning mountain views
  • Comfortable temperatures—not too hot, not too cold
  • Stable, predictable weather
  • Post-monsoon freshness with clean air
  • Perfect for high-altitude treks

Cons:

  • Most crowded season (book early!)
  • Higher prices for accommodation and domestic flights
  • Major trekking routes can feel congested
  • Festivals may affect availability

Best Treks:

Perfect for: All major treks including Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu Circuit, Gokyo Lakes

Winter (December – February)

Pros:

  • Incredibly clear skies—best mountain views of the year
  • Empty trails—you’ll often have the path to yourself
  • Lower prices for accommodation
  • Cultural experiences in Kathmandu and Pokhara
  • Perfect for lower-altitude treks

Cons:

  • Cold temperatures, especially at high altitude (-20°C at night)
  • Heavy snowfall can block high passes
  • Some teahouses close for the season
  • Shorter daylight hours
  • Risk of altitude issues in extreme cold

Best Treks:

Perfect for: Langtang Valley, Ghorepani Poon Hill, Annapurna Base Camp, Lower Mustang

Possible but challenging: Everest Base Camp (needs proper cold-weather gear)

Monsoon (June – August)

Pros:

  • Lowest prices of the year
  • Lush, green landscapes
  • Wildflowers everywhere
  • Empty trails
  • Warm temperatures

Cons:

  • Heavy rainfall (can trek all day in rain)
  • Leeches at lower altitudes
  • Cloudy skies obscure mountain views
  • Risk of landslides on some trails
  • Muddy, slippery trails
  • Domestic flights often delayed

Best Treks:

Perfect for: Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo (rain shadow areas)

Possible: Annapurna Circuit (east side), Langtang (with flexibility)

Month-by-Month Breakdown

March

⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Spring begins, weather warming up, flowers starting to bloom

April

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Peak season, best weather, rhododendrons in full bloom

May

⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Getting warmer, pre-monsoon clouds in afternoon, still excellent

June

⭐⭐ – Monsoon begins, rain increases, only rain-shadow areas recommended

July & August

⭐⭐ – Peak monsoon, only Upper Mustang and Dolpo viable

September

⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Monsoon ends, weather stabilizing, trails still quiet

October

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Peak season, best visibility, perfect temperatures

November

⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Still excellent, getting colder, fewer crowds than October

December

⭐⭐⭐ – Cold but clear, low-altitude treks best, quiet trails

January & February

⭐⭐ – Coldest months, lower treks only, crystal-clear views

Our Recommendations

For First-Timers:

October or April – comfortable weather, good infrastructure, beautiful views

For Budget Travelers:

December or June – lower prices, fewer crowds, flexible if weather affects plans

For Adventure Seekers:

February or June – challenging conditions, empty trails, authentic experience

For Photographers:

October or December – clearest skies, best visibility, stunning light

Bottom Line

While spring and autumn are considered the “best” seasons, Nepal offers great trekking year-round if you choose the right trek for the season. The quieter months can offer equally rewarding experiences with the right preparation and expectations.
